August 28, 2026 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- bp has signed a long-term agreement with Channel Infrastructure to develop additional diesel and jet fuel storage capacity at the Marsden Point Energy Precinct in New Zealand.
The agreement will see Channel Infrastructure work over the next two years to bring the additional storage capacity into service for bp. Commissioning is expected to take place progressively from 2028, significantly increasing the site’s capacity for both diesel and aviation fuel.
The project involves repurposing existing storage tanks, with work scheduled to begin in September 2026 and completion targeted for the third quarter of 2028.
The additional capacity is expected to support bp’s fuel supply operations while contributing to New Zealand’s broader fuel storage and supply resilience. The project will provide additional jet fuel storage at a strategically important point in the supply chain serving Auckland International Airport, alongside increased diesel storage.
Haley Mahoney, country president of bp New Zealand and vice president of Aviation Asia Pacific, said the additional storage would help the company meet current and future customer demand while supporting fuel security and resilience in New Zealand.
She added that bp’s agreement with Channel Infrastructure reflects the company’s continued investment in infrastructure and supply chains in a market where it has operated for almost 80 years.
Channel Infrastructure Chief Executive Rob Buchanan described the agreement as a strategically important investment in New Zealand’s fuel infrastructure. He highlighted the additional jet fuel storage’s position within the Auckland International Airport supply chain and the importance of additional diesel capacity to the country’s economy.
The project forms part of Channel Infrastructure’s wider role in supporting New Zealand’s fuel supply chain through storage and infrastructure services. The Marsden Point Energy Precinct provides infrastructure for the import, storage and distribution of fuel products, making it a key component of the country’s fuel logistics network.
Once completed, the project will add substantial diesel and jet fuel storage capacity at Marsden Point, strengthening the infrastructure available to support fuel supply to New Zealand’s domestic market.
