Colonial Terminals Opens New Multimodal Breakbulk Facility on the Savannah River
09.09.2026 By Tank Terminals - NEWS

September 09, 2026 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- Colonial Terminals has announced the opening of Foundation 3, a new breakbulk facility on the Savannah River that expands the company’s terminal network and its capacity to handle cargo moving through the Southeast and other US markets.

The approximately 25-acre terminal is designed to provide integrated marine, rail, trucking and storage services while adding breakbulk capacity in the Savannah logistics market. The facility offers direct vessel access, Class I rail service through Norfolk Southern, and connectivity to Interstate 16 and Interstate 95.

The development comes as the Port of Savannah continues to grow as a major container gateway, while demand for infrastructure serving bulk, breakbulk and industrial cargo remains an important part of the region’s broader logistics network.

According to Colonial Terminals Vice President of Operations Troy Gouger, Foundation 3 represents an investment in infrastructure and multimodal transportation capabilities designed to meet evolving customer requirements.

“Foundation 3 reflects our continued commitment to investing in the infrastructure, capabilities and services our customers need to grow,” Gouger said. He added that the facility is intended to expand Colonial Terminals’ ability to provide multimodal cargo solutions while supporting Savannah’s role in breakbulk and industrial freight.

The facility was developed to allow cargo to move between vessel, rail, truck and warehouse operations at a single location. This multimodal configuration is intended to provide shippers with greater flexibility as supply chains continue to evolve.

Foundation 3 features an 810-foot heavy-capacity dock capable of handling a range of breakbulk and project cargo vessels. The terminal also includes an onsite rail yard with more than 14,000 feet of track, terminal-operated switching services and access to rail-served warehouse facilities.

The terminal is designed to support 24-hour operations, allowing cargo movements to be scheduled around customer and supply-chain requirements.

Storage infrastructure includes two warehouses totaling 130,000 square feet, including a renovated dockside warehouse. The site also has a 75,000-square-foot concrete storage area for outdoor cargo, while additional adjacent acreage provides space for potential future expansion.

Foundation 3 is equipped to handle commodities including steel, forest products, project cargo, palletized products, super sacks and other general cargo. Colonial Terminals said both union and non-union stevedoring services are available, depending on customer and cargo requirements.

The opening adds another logistics asset to the Savannah River corridor and represents Colonial Terminals’ latest investment in the region’s maritime and freight infrastructure. The company expects the facility to support the movement of bulk, breakbulk and industrial cargo as trade patterns and supply-chain requirements continue to change.
