September 09, 2026 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- Exolum is progressing plans for a new aviation fuel storage and distribution facility at Düsseldorf International Airport in Germany, with the project now in detailed engineering and construction planning.
Documentation required for the project’s administrative approvals and building permit has been submitted to the German authorities and is currently under review.
The planned facility will comprise four storage tanks, each with a capacity of 2,813 m³, providing a combined storage capacity of approximately 11,252 m³. The development will also include a rail unloading area and an approximately 900-metre pipeline to support the movement of aviation fuel within the airport supply network.
The infrastructure is designed to strengthen the airport’s aviation fuel supply security while increasing the role of rail transportation in its supply logistics.
Alongside the permitting process, Exolum is undertaking technical coordination, contracting and procurement activities in preparation for construction. Equipment and materials required for the facility are also being sourced as the project progresses towards the construction phase.
A further milestone was reached on 1st July with the formal handover of the site on which the new facility will be constructed.
The Düsseldorf project forms part of Exolum’s broader focus on aviation infrastructure and is intended to provide additional fuel storage and logistics capacity at one of Germany’s major airports.
Once completed and operational, the combination of storage tanks, rail unloading facilities and pipeline infrastructure will provide an integrated system for receiving and distributing aviation fuel, with rail expected to play a greater role in the facility’s supply chain.
