HES Hartel Tank Terminal Takes Shape

July 29, 2019 [Tank News International] – The HES Hartel Tank Terminal at the Port of Rotterdam is beginning to take shape. The first in a total of 22 building cranes for the construction of the 54 tanks are now in place, and opposite, the BP terminal has made preparations for the underground pipelines that connect both terminals.

The terminal, on the Hartelstrook in the Port of Rotterdam, is a tank terminal in development. Parent company HES International is developing this tank terminal for the storage and transhipment of oil products and biofuels on the Hartelstrook, on the south side of the Mississippihaven on the Maasvlakte.

The internationally operating energy company BP – owner of a large refinery in Rotterdam – has committed itself to the project, including plans for 1km of pipeline connections between the refinery and the terminal. The tanks will be realised on the 27-hectare site, with a storage capacity of around 1.3 million cbm.

HES International B.V.’s investment fits in with the trend that major international players see Rotterdam as a strategic location and therefore invest and concentrate their activities here. This pleases us, since this concentration of activities ensures greater efficiency and therefore a smaller footprint. At the same time, it strengthens Rotterdam’s competitive position”, said Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. “This new terminal fits in with our strategy to continue to support and renew the existing sectors in our port during the energy transition, as well as to develop new industry.

The combined investments in the terminal and the nautical infrastructure amount to several hundred million euros. After commissioning, the terminal will be operational 24/7 and will employ around 100 people.
