August 22, 2026. According to Nature, building on the region’s oil infrastructure, investment funds and shipping corridors, Gulf nations can thrive in the clean-energy economy.
Middle East oil producers can pivot existing petroleum infrastructure into a global hub for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to capture new revenue as oil demand plateaus.
World-class export terminals (such as Ras Tanura, Ras Laffan, Ruwais and Fujairah), refining capacity and storage assets can be rapidly adapted for SAF blending, storage and export at a scale few other regions can match.
Empty returning crude tankers offer a major supply-chain efficiency: they can backhaul biomass and waste-oil feedstocks from Asia and Europe for processing in Gulf facilities, turning one-way oil trade into a circular logistics model.
Sovereign wealth funds and national oil companies are well positioned to finance overseas feedstock production and secure long-term SAF offtake, while aviation hubs create natural demand via “green flight paths.”
This strategy turns oil-era ports, refineries and tanker fleets into the backbone of a low-carbon aviation fuel supply chain linking biomass regions to European and Asian markets.
