MB Energy And Metafuels Strengthen Collaboration to Advance European e-SAF Value Chain

September 10, 2026 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- MB Energy and Metafuels have entered into a collaboration aimed at developing an end-to-end supply chain for certified synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF), connecting production with the infrastructure and logistics required to deliver the fuel to aircraft.

The agreements were signed at the opening of Metafuels’ demonstration plant in Switzerland and are intended to strengthen Europe’s e-SAF value chain while supporting the development of a resilient and independent supply network. The collaboration will initially focus on Metafuels’ Turbe project in Rotterdam, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2030.

Under the partnership, the two companies will work across areas including market access, blending, infrastructure and logistics, as well as certification and the exchange of information required to support e-SAF deployment.

The companies said the collaboration is intended to address infrastructure gaps within the synthetic aviation fuel supply chain by developing solutions capable of moving e-SAF from production through transportation and blending to delivery to aircraft.

The agreement also includes a proposed methanol supply arrangement under which MB Energy could potentially provide methanol feedstock for the production process.

Metafuels is developing technology that converts methanol produced from renewable feedstocks into synthetic aviation fuel. The company’s work on the Turbe project forms part of its broader effort to establish the supply chain required ahead of the planned 2030 launch.

The companies said the supply chain is intended to be resilient to disruptions affecting global sustainable aviation fuel supplies and to incorporate partnerships covering feedstock, logistics, infrastructure and fuel delivery.

For MB Energy, the collaboration provides an opportunity to apply its trading, logistics, infrastructure and certification capabilities to emerging e-SAF supply chains and support the development of new pathways for synthetic aviation fuel.

“This is a major step towards getting e-SAF into plane wings,” said Philipp Kroepels, director New Energy at MB Energy. “Reducing the carbon intensity of aviation fuels will require strong partnerships that connect innovative technologies, renewable molecules, reliable infrastructure and customer access.”

The partnership comes as the aviation sector seeks to develop scalable alternatives to conventional fossil-based jet fuel. While technology development remains a key part of the e-SAF challenge, the companies highlighted the importance of regulatory certainty, infrastructure and transportation solutions capable of handling blended and certified fuels.

Matthias Schnellmann, vice president commercial at Metafuels, said the opening of the company’s demonstration plant represented a step towards translating its technology into an industrial-scale aviation fuel solution.

“Scaling e-SAF is a supply chain challenge as much as a technology one,” Schnellmann said, adding that the company would work with MB Energy to support the commercialisation of e-SAF.

The collaboration is expected to contribute to the development of an integrated supply chain capable of connecting synthetic fuel production with aviation customers, as Europe works to expand the availability of lower-carbon aviation fuels.
