New Copersucar Terminal to Play Key Role in Ethanol Deliveries by Pipeline

Septmber 22, 2014 [OPIS] - Brazil's Copersucar has started operations at a new ethanol terminal in Paulinia, which is a major ethanol distribution hub in the state of Sao Paulo.

The terminal, known as Terminal Copersucar de Etanol (TCE), has obtained authorization to operate from Brazil’s National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP).

The terminal received its first delivery of the biofuel — 332,000 liters of hydrous ethanol — on Sept. 9. The next day, another delivery of 268,000 liters was received, bringing the total delivered volume to 600,000 liters. A total of 15 million liters of ethanol was expected to be delivered to the terminal over a matter of days.

The terminal involved an investment of approximately 150 million reals (US$64 million) and has a storage capacity of 180 million liters. The terminal will play a key role in the distribution of ethanol via both truck and pipeline.
That’s because the terminal will be linked into the ethanol pipeline system of Logum Logistica, in which Copersucar has a stake.

When the entire pipeline is completed, it will cover a distance of 1,300 kilometers and pass through 45 municipalities, connecting Paulinia with Brazil’s main ethanol-producing regions in the states of Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goias and Mato Grosso.

OPIS reported in August 2013 on the completion of a 206-kilometer segment of the pipeline between Ribeirao Preto (a major ethanol production hub in Sao Paulo state) and Petrobras’ Paulinia refinery.

Another 145-kilometer segment of the pipeline was slated for completion in August of this year to connect a terminal in Ribeirao Preto with a terminal in Uberaba in the state of Minas Gerais.

The next phase of the pipeline project is a 1.9-kilometer segment that will connect the TCE terminal with Petrobras’ Paulinia refining system.

The terminal has 10 ethanol tanks with capacities ranging from 5 million to 40 million liters. The terminal also features parking for 100 trucks.

It’s estimated that the terminal in its first phase of operation will handle 2.3 billion liters of ethanol per season.
