August 24, 2026 [Storage Terminals Magazine]- Uniper and Equinor have signed a 15-year agreement under which Equinor will supply more than 30 TWh of natural gas annually to Uniper between 2027 and 2041.
The agreement is intended to strengthen the long-term supply of natural gas to Germany while further diversifying Uniper’s supply portfolio. The deal is also expected to support the company’s efforts to maintain reliable gas supplies for its customers amid continued volatility across global energy markets.
Equinor is one of Europe’s major natural gas suppliers, with its Norwegian Continental Shelf production providing a significant source of pipeline gas to European markets. For Uniper, the agreement adds another long-term supply relationship with an established European producer and provides greater visibility over future gas availability.
Uniper CEO Michael Lewis described the agreement as an important step in strengthening Germany’s energy supply and highlighted the potential for the two companies to cooperate on lower-emissions natural gas solutions.
Equinor CEO Anders Opedal said the agreement extends the companies’ longstanding relationship and reflects continued demand for long-term gas supplies from the Norwegian Continental Shelf. He also pointed to Norway’s role as a major energy supplier to Europe and the comparatively low carbon footprint associated with Norwegian natural gas.
The agreement comes as European energy markets continue to face uncertainty linked to changing supply patterns, geopolitical developments and price volatility. Long-term contracts with established producers are increasingly viewed by market participants as one component of maintaining supply security and supporting a competitive gas market.
Norwegian pipeline gas has a direct connection to European consumers, with existing infrastructure linking production on the Norwegian Continental Shelf to markets across the continent. This established supply network is expected to remain an important element of Europe’s natural gas system.
Beyond the gas supply agreement, Uniper and Equinor said they intend to explore further cooperation around natural gas with a lower emissions footprint. The companies see the latest deal as providing a foundation for developing this area while continuing to support reliable natural gas supplies to Germany and the wider European market.
