August 31, 2026 [Tank News International]- OMV Petrom, Southeastern Europe’s largest integrated energy producer, has received all seven modules for a second green hydrogen electrolyzer at its Petrobrazi refinery in Romania, expanding the site’s total installed green hydrogen production capacity to 55 MW.
The new electrolyzer has a capacity of 35 MW and will complement a previously announced 20 MW unit at the refinery. Once operational, the two projects are expected to produce approximately 8,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using renewable electricity.
The green hydrogen will be used in refinery processes, including the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). OMV Petrom said the use of green hydrogen will help reduce emissions associated with these fuels compared with conventional alternatives.
Radu Caprau, member of OMV Petrom’s Executive Board responsible for Refining and Marketing, said the expansion to 55 MW represented an important development for the Petrobrazi refinery.
The company is also progressing with the construction of a 250,000-tonne-per-year SAF and HVO facility at Petrobrazi, which OMV Petrom expects will make it the first major producer of sustainable fuels in Southeast Europe.
The second green hydrogen project comprises seven electrolysis modules, each with a capacity of 5 MW, supplied by Germany-based Neuman & Esser. The modules were delivered to the Petrobrazi refinery over a two-month period and are now being integrated into the existing refinery infrastructure.
Construction, logistics, component manufacturing and module assembly at Petrobrazi are being carried out by Kraftanlagen Romania in cooperation with local suppliers.
The 35 MW project is receiving approximately €29 million in non-reimbursable funding through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
Once operational, the second electrolyzer is expected to produce approximately 4,700 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. The hydrogen will primarily supply the new SAF and HVO production facility under construction at Petrobrazi.
Together, the two hydrogen projects will provide 55 MW of installed electrolysis capacity and an estimated annual production of around 8,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. The hydrogen will be used across refinery processes, including the production of SAF and HVO from vegetable and waste oils.
OMV Petrom said the resulting sustainable fuels have the potential to reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by at least 65 percent compared with conventional alternatives. The company also noted that the fuels are compatible with existing infrastructure, supporting their integration into established fuel supply and distribution networks.
The development forms part of OMV Petrom’s broader strategy to expand lower-carbon fuel production while adapting existing refining infrastructure to support the energy transition.
