April 11, 2018 [Tank News International] - Soma LNG Terminal, located at Soma Port in Shinchi Town of Fukushima Prefecture, commenced operations on March 28, according to Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX).
This LNG terminal will receive LNG from overseas, to provide its vapourised gas to the Japex gas pipeline network via the Soma-Iwanuma Gas Pipeline, and to supply LNG by satellite system such as domestic vessel to the Yufutsu LNG Receiving Terminal and LNG tank trucks in regions not served by gas pipeline networks.
By accelerating the “Gas-Integration” initiative through the installation of the terminal as an important starting point of our network, JAPEX will strengthen the capability of long-term and stable natural gas supply to our clients mainly in Tohoku region.
“As the first LNG terminal in Fukushima, this terminal is expected to contribute for the revitalisation of neighborhood regions through developing new regional economics and clusters of industries, creating job opportunities, activating local community led by supplying natural gas and other energy sources,” the company said in a statement.
Following the decision on the commercialisation of the natural gas-fired power generation project at the Soma port which is conducted by Fukushima Gas Power Co., Ltd. (FGP) and joining the five business partners including JAPEX, additional construction of a 230,000 kiloliters LNG storage tank and vapourisation equipment in the LNG terminal in progress.
JAPEX is conducting construction management of the additional facilities, and will be in charge of its operation and maintenance after the commercial operation commencement as well as receiving, storing, and vapourising LNG and supplying vapourised natural gas for fuel of power generation to the Fukushima Natural Gas Power Plant which is under construction for the commencement in April, 2020 adjacent to the terminal.
